Market yourself: Make a MOOC

These are difficult times for law schools. And many a law firm would not mind seeing more clients  entering through its doors.

Here is a solution. Show your expertise to potental clients: make a legal MOOC. Not only will you have fun and learn a lot yourself. It is a great marketing tool! I bet that students and clients will beat a path to your door.

I am sure your organisation has some hidden gems, and MOOCs provide an opportunity to let them shine.

How to make a good MOOC? First, stop and think: do not underestimate both the required time investment and the positive response.

Some steps you could consider:

  1. Explore the context in a book.
  2. Decide what kind of MOOC you would like to make.
  3. Look for handy tips for example here.
  4. Consider accepting some help from organisations like Curatr
  5. Just start by making a simple MOOC in an interesting niche (but check what already exists).
  6. Let me know when it is ready to get some free feedback.

My own tip: make sure that the instructional design of your MOOC is sound. This ensures that your offering provides effective, efficient and motivating learning. If not, your MOOC will create the opposite effect of what you want to achieve: attract students or clients.

If you like distance learning, you might even consider taking a course.

I regularly follow MOOC’s. If you have not done it, just start doing it. I am sure you too will  enjoy this way of expanding and deepening expertise. I at least harbour a silent admiration and respect for my MOOC teachers.
